EDM Hole Drilling Services

A unique service that Custom EDM offers is EDM Hole Drilling for blind and through holes. Our purpose-built CNC-operated EDM hole-popping machines can produce holes as small as 300 microns (0.0120”) in some of the toughest conductive materials available like carbide and nickel. EDM generator technologies and electrode materials allow for high precision hole sizes, excellent hole edge quality, superior surface finish, improved overall part accuracy, and excellent hole consistency.

What Is Edm Hole Drilling?

Electrical discharge machining works similarly to sinker EDM by eroding or burning away conductive materials through a pipe-shaped electrode. When compared to drilling holes with a traditional cutting tool, the pipe electrode doesn't touch the material being machined, so deflection is minimized. As the tube electrode is energized and spun at high speeds during EDM Holepop, high-pressure flushing is pumped through it to flush out the material being cut away from the workpiece. With this process, Custom EDM can produce fast and accurate holes in all types of conductive metals.  In addition to offering the highest level of accuracy, incredible reliability, and unique automation, our EDM drilling machines also feature unique automation that boosts productivity. In addition to small-scale production applications requiring a few holes, EDM Hole Drilling is a great choice for applications requiring thousands of holes in high-volume production.

Edm Hole Drilling Capabilities

There is no easy way to drill accurate and repeatable holes in extremely hard materials. With decades of Sinker EDM experience, Custom EDM can efficiently machine holes in some of the toughest conductive materials. For 25 years we have been offering standard tolerances (0.0010″ to 0.0005″), as well as high precision tolerances as tight as 0.0001″ (2 microns) for an array of industries and applications. Our 3-Axis and 5-Axis CNC hole drilling electrical discharge machinery have the capacity to run multiple pipe electrode sizes, ranging from 0.3mm (0.0120″) to 4mm (0.1575″) in diameter.

Common EDM Hole Drilling Applications

In cases where blind holes and/or through holes are required with extremely high accuracy and depth, EDM Hole Drilling should be considered. The EDM Hole Drilling process is well suited to parts that have intricate tolerances, limited material stress, and high surface roughness. In cases where hard or brittle materials are required by design, sinker EDM Hole drilling is often the only machining method that can produce quality holes. When it comes to EDM Hole Drilling, conventional machining methods such as CNC drilling can wear out drills much faster than EDM Hole Drilling pipe electrodes. Machine automation allows us to scale up the quantities of parts being produced to meet the high volumes required by some of our largest customers.
